A.S. Sport Management Concentration

An A.S. degree in the Sport Management Concentration prepares students for a baccalaureate degree in athletics, sports and recreation management. Also, it provides students with the required educational courses and practical experience for careers in sport management. Students can transfer to Long Island University-Brooklyn Branch, Mercy College, St. John's University, Farmingdale State College, Adelphi University, or the CUNY BA

In recent years, a career in Sport Management can be defined as including people who have a sports background, management experience, and a business background. Every professional sports team has people that bring these skills to the organization. To prepare for a degree in the Sport Management program, students will take courses in Facilities Planning, Introduction to Sports Management, Sports and American Society, and Fieldwork experience. Students complete 100 hours of supervised fieldwork experience in a College setting, YMCA, Community Center, or Parks and Recreation Department.

A career in sport management has gained acceptance as a major professional degree leading to a satisfying career. Professional sports teams (Yankees, Mets, Knicks, and Rangers) and semi-professional teams provide jobs in sport management. College athletic departments also provide positions as athletic director, assistant director, intramural and club sports manager, sports information director, and sports facility operations manager.

The Sport Management degree can be used in sports business, marketing, and administration in terms of operating a sport team or sport facility. Sport management students also can start their own sports business.
