Kingsborough Continuing Education Healthcare Institute Programs

The Healthcare Institute is a division of Kingsborough’s Office of Continuing Education, offering a dynamic set of certificate programs and stand-alone courses. All are designed to provide students with essential skill sets necessary for today’s burgeoning healthcare industry. With decades of experience and training, our faculty provides high quality instruction across all the disciplines.

Many of our programs offer students who successfully complete our courses and lab work, eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association’s (NHA) certifying examinations, which are nationally recognized credentials in the Allied Health industry.

Please note, all of the programs listed below require students to register for and complete the Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course, RTP 40.  This course has a tuition cost of $100.  Class is held on campus for 8 hours, usually on weekend dates.

RTP 40- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers $100
This course provides the skills to recognize and provide care in respiratory and cardiac emergencies, using the latest 2015 AHA guidelines, to teach adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic external defibrillator use. Basic life support skills include CPR, AED use, and ventilations. 

CENTRAL STERILE TECHNICIAN (CRCST) –  [88+ Learning Hours]

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills required to work in a Central/Supply Sterile Processing healthcare facility. Three (3) on campus labs required. Students are responsible for securing CSPT hands-on training necessary to meet 400-hour HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) certification requirements.

Note: We offer a tuition paid externship to help students complete the required hands-on CSPT 400 hours to gain full HSPA certification. Students can test prior to the 400 hours and earn a provisional HSPA certification.

Testing Agency:  HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM. Exam is fully computerized and is administered at HSPA testing centers (Prometric testing centers, as per HSPA). HSPA exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

Requirement: No minimum age required and no HS diploma/GED requirement. Most, not all, hospitals hire individuals of working age.

CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE (C.N.A.) – [135 total learning hrs—96 hrs classroom/lab, 32 hrs Supervised Clinical Experience, 7 hrs CPR]

A Certified Nurse Aide assists Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) with direct patient care. This demanding, yet exciting program will prepare you for an entry-level position in a nursing home or hospital facility. Student medical clearance is required to participate in the clinical experience.

Testing Agency: Prometric. Prometric exam fees are the responsibility of the student. Eligible students can take the test on campus during scheduled dates or through Prometric at their testing locations.

Requirements: Students must be at least 18 years of age to enter our New York State Education Department approved nurse aide training program. Student completers are eligible to test for New York State nurse aide certification (Prometric). Employment as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) is based upon local employer age policies.  This curriculum is taught at a fourth (4th) to sixth (6th) grade English literacy level. No HS diploma/GED requirement.

Other: Textbook and burgundy uniform scrubs required for course.

CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT (CCMA) – [307 Learning Hours]

Certified Clinical Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices and clinics of physicians running smoothly. Students must sign an Assumption of Risk. Multiple on campus Labs required.

EKG/ECG TECHNICIAN (CET) – [127 Learning Hours]

These courses provide an overview of basic cardiovascular terminology, anatomy, and physiology, and outlines the responsibilities for earning the certified EKG/ECG Technician Certification. Multiple on campus Labs required.

ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS SPECIALIST (CEHRS) - [60 Learning Hours]

This course introduces students to the basic functions of Electronic Health Records (EHR). It includes discussions and illustrations on the latest information management technologies (both hardware and software) currently used in healthcare.  Students will be immersed in the environment, organization, and terminologies unique to the use of EHR at all levels of patient care.  Computer-based hands-on exercises will be a part of this course.

Testing Agency: NHA. Students can test at a NHA Regional testing Center or from home with remote proctoring. NHA exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

Requirements: HS Diploma or GED required for NHA testing.

Other: Textbook and computer proficiency required.

HOME HEALTH AIDE (H.H.A) – [82 total Learning Hours - 8 hrs Clinical Experience, 7 hrs CPR]

Home Health Aides (HHA) provide professional healthcare in a patient’s home environment. Patient can range from elderly to disabled to chronically-ill individuals who do not require hospitalization. Course is a combination of classroom (lecture) learning along with 8 hours of on-campus labs and 8 hours of in-person clinicals experience at a partner location off-campus. Basic Life Support is included with all fees and takes place on an alternate schedule. Student medical clearance is required to participate in the clinical experience.

Testing Agency: Kingsborough.

Requirements: NYS DOH requires students to be age 18. No HS diploma/GED requirement.

Other: Textbook and burgundy uniform scrubs required for course.

MEDICAL BILLING & CODING SPECIALIST (CBCS) – [182 Learning Hours]

This course is a combination of three (3) courses; Intro to Terminology and Insurance, Procedures & Coding, and Computerized Billing & Clinical Practice.

Intro to Terminology and Insurance - An overview of the medical terminology used in a medical office, starting with the basics of anatomy, including the human body and its skeletal, pulmonary, digestive, cardiovascular and reproductive system and an introduction to health insurance.

Procedures & Coding - Covers CPT, a systematic linking and coding of procedures and services used in outpatient settings. This coding is required for billing and reimbursement by insurers. ICD-10-CM, the international classification of diseases, is used worldwide by many healthcare facilities.

Computerized Billing & Clinical Practice - Learning of office procedures and billing to include scheduling patients for laboratory, surgical and testing procedures, completing patient charts, and accounting practices using state-of-the-art medical software.

Testing Agency: NHA. Students can test at a NHA Regional testing Center or from home with remote proctoring. NHA exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

Requirements: HS Diploma or GED required for NHA testing.

PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN (CPCT) – [128 Learning Hours]

Study includes comprehensive instruction on vascular anatomy and performance of venipuncture techniques. Students will also learn and practice performing EKGs and basic terms associated with cardiovascular system, anatomy and physiology. This course is for Certified Nurse Aides only. Live needle sticks performed. Students must sign an Assumption of Risk. Multiple on campus Labs required.

Testing Agency: NHA. Students can test at a NHA Regional testing Center or from home with remote proctoring. NHA exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

Requirements: HS Diploma or GED required for NHA testing.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN (CPhT) – [70+ Learning Hours]

This course provides an overall view of the fundamentals of medical and pharmaceutical terminology. Pharmaceutical calculations, concepts of pharmacology and medicinal therapy as it relates to anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. Students will also learn about laws, ethics and standards required in the pharmacy profession. Application of knowledge in an on-site hospital and retail setting. 

Note: We offer a tuition paid externship in this area.

Requirements: HS Diploma or GED required for NHA testing.

PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN (CPT) – [127 Learning Hours]

Become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician by taking this comprehensive, hands-on program. Live needle sticks performed. Students must sign an Assumption of Risk. Multiple on campus Labs required.

The Maternal Health and DONA Doula Training program 

Is a comprehensive course that provides the foundation to understand the field of maternal health. Students will become trained as birth doulas and learn how to apply basic skills and competencies in various community settings. Students learn about the history of maternal health in the US and how maternal health plays a role in marginalized communities, recognize how implicit bias impacts maternal health, and learn to address persistent and emerging issues surrounding maternal health. Students learn basic clinical knowledge of preconception, pregnancy and postpartum and discuss the impact community health workers play in decreasing maternal morbidity and mortality.  100% attendance is required for successful completion of the course. This course will result in a CUNY Certificate of Completion, DONA Childbirth Education for Doulas, DONA Birth Doula Training and DONA Lactation for Doulas.

Health and Wellness Coach Certification Prep Program

The National Board of Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) approved this health and wellness coach training program. The program prepares students to become health and wellness professionals, emphasizing health and wellness coaching. Students will gain knowledge and skills to help clients and patients explore their own journeys in health and wellness and address barriers and facilitators of their health behaviors. Students will learn to recognize risk factors for chronic diseases and apply comprehensive, evidence-based approaches in health promotion and disease prevention. The program focuses on techniques used to motivate individuals from various backgrounds and perspectives to adopt various psychosocial and practical approaches that enhance health and wellness, such as goal setting, mindfulness, the development of self-efficacy, self-compassion, and self-actualization.
