From Passion to Profession: Free Doula Training for Qualifying New Yorkers Passionate About Birth Support to Begin at KCC in May
March 7, 2023 – KCC has been awarded $110,000 to begin offering free online doula training for qualified applicants. The 15-hour program will be offered live via Zoom beginning in May. We are partnering with Restore Forward Institute | Black Women’s Blueprint to provide training through our Workforce Development division.

Cannabis to Cuisine
March 3, 2023 — KCC, in partnership with City Tech, has received a $1M grant from the CUNY Workforce Development Training Grant/Contract Courses to add credential and micro-credential certifications in culinary cannabis to their existing hospitality and culinary arts programs. Slated to begin this summer, the campuses expect to train a total of 250 students over the next three years.

Kingsborough Psychology Professor Receives Prestigious Award From SPSSI
February 15, 2023 — Dr. Catherine Ma, Kingsborough Community College's first Chinese full professor of psychology, is the most recent recipient of the Two-Year College Teaching and Mentoring Excellence Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI). The award recognizes the ways in which faculty at two-year colleges further SPSSI's mission to advance the understanding of social issues by integrating their research into teaching and initiatives with students and the surrounding community, both in and out of the classroom. Ma immigrated to the United States from Kowloon, Hong Kong, became a naturalized citizen and overcame many struggles as an immigrant and first-generation college student.

February 6, 2023 – Beginning Tuesday, February 7, 2023, and continuing every other Tuesday, KCC representative Hillary Stackpole, program administrator of K-BON (Kingsborough Bridges to Opportunity Network), will be on-site at the Alliance for Coney Island's office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at 1904 Surf Avenue. She will offer one-on-one sessions and presentations to local organizations about job training and educational resources available at the College to help connect residents with employment opportunities in Coney Island and beyond.

Kingsborough Community College To Offer Online Seed-To-Sale Training To Meet Growing Demand Of The Cannabis Field
December 7, 2022- Kingsborough Community College has partnered with education provider Green Flower to offer three online certificates designed to quickly train professionals to fill the growing skills gap needs of companies in the legalized cannabis industry: advanced dispensary associate, advanced cultivation technician, and advanced manufacturing agent.

November 29, 2022 – Under the watchful eye of their professor, John Acosta, Jeremy Rodriguez and Isaiah Williams, two students enrolled in KCC's media arts program, had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills when they crewed a recent meeting of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the global professional association of engineers, technologists, and executives in the media and entertainment industry.

KCC Receives Grant To Re-Engage And Re-Enroll Kingsborough Students
November 22, 2022 – KCC was awarded $250,000 by the Heckscher Foundation for Children, in partnership with the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation to re-engage high school graduates who applied to KCC but never enrolled at any college and re-enrollment of first-time freshmen who stopped out before finishing their degrees.

Kingsborough Professor Nanin Serves as Advisor for New Training Protocols Developed by the World Health Organization
November 9, 2022- Access to health services depends on the availability, accessibility, and quality of health workers as well as its health leadership and management. Interested in creating a workforce better trained in dealing with global health issues, Kingsborough Community College professor, Dr. Jose Nanin, went to Geneva in November 2019 to interview Dr. Giorgio Cometto, coordinator of human resources for health policies, norms and standards at the World Health Organization (WHO).

RIBBON CUTTING MARKS THE PHASE I COMPLETION OF THE STUDENT UNION & INTERCULTURAL CENTER
October 18, 2022 — Kingsborough Community College President Claudia Schrader, Kingsborough Student Life Director Helen-Margaret Nassar, former KCC President Farley Herzek, CUNY Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Denise Maybank, and State Senator Roxanne Persaud were joined by several students to cut the ribbon to the newly refurbished spaces today, marking the end of the first phase of the new Student Union & Intercultural Center (SU&IC). The project was completed with partial support of a $600,000 grant from Albany, secured by Senator Persaud.

KCC AWARDED $450K LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP GRANT
October 14, 2022- KCC has been awarded a five-year, $2.25 million Liberty Partnership grant ($450,000 each year to serve 360 students). We will be working in collaboration with Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation and serving students located at the Thomas Jefferson campus who are identified as at risk of dropping out.

KINGSBOROUGH OPENS ITS FIRST SATELLITE LOCATION
October 4, 2022 - Kingsborough Community College President Dr. Claudia V. Schrader summed it up best by saying “It’s a special day to celebrate.” KCC unveiled its first satellite location on Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony of Chestnut Commons, a 14-story building at 110 Dinsmore Place in East New York/Cypress Hills Brooklyn that will provide 275 permanently affordable homes, retail space and a community center. It is one of the first developments from the East New York Neighborhood Plan.

September 19, 2022 — Kingsborough Community College received a grant of $710k to expand the CareerReady Work, Learn & Grow Program, administered by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development in partnership with the NYC Department of Education, and provide 4,200 high school students with courses designed to help them make a smooth transition from high school to college and the “real’ world. KCC is the only college participating in the program.

September 9, 2022 — The Joy of Giving Something has granted Kingsborough Community College (KCC) $10,000 in scholarship money to be awarded to declared KCC fine arts majors with a concentration in photography and KCC students enrolled in either Photography II or Photojournalism in Fiscal Year 2023, who can show how the scholarship will help in their study of photography.

August 22, 2022 — The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program announced that Dr. Joanne Russell, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at CUNY’s Kingsborough Community College, is one of 31 leaders selected nationwide for the 2022-23 class of the Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship, which prepares the next generation of community college leaders. June 14, 2022 — Jory Keogh will serve as valedictorian of Kingsborough Community College's class of 2022 at the 57th commencement ceremony on June 16, 2022. He graduated in August 2021 and now attends Hunter College, where he is majoring in studio art, concentrating on painting, and minoring in film.

TWO KINGSBOROUGH PROFESSORS NAMED 2022 MELLON/ACLS FELLOWS
May 23, 2022 — Sara Rutkowski (associate professor of English) and Elke Weesjes Sabella (substitute assistant professor of history) were named 2022 Mellon/ACLS Fellows by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). They are among thirty 2022 fellows from across the country, 13 of whom are from The City University of New York (CUNY). Each will receive $40,000 to advance their projects.

MEET THE TWO KCC SEMIFINALISTS FOR THE COVETED COOKE UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIP
April 4, 2022 — KCC students Shaindy Weichman and Jiahua Wu were among the 440 nationwide semifinalists selected by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation for its highly competitive Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from a nationwide pool of more than 1,200 applicants. Finalists for the coveted scholarship, which would provide up to $55,000 per year to attend a four-year college, will be announced by early May.

March 29, 2022 — Mayor Eric Adams announced the launch of V-CRED, a new vocational training and apprenticeship program that will provide professional opportunities for youth in foster care, ages 16 to 24, at Kingsborough Community College. February 9, 2022 - Dr. Laura Spinu and Dr. Carlos de Cuba of KCC’s speech communication program presented a paper titled “Taking action for positive change in faculty and student attitudes toward language variation” in a session called “Critical Issues in Linguistics” at the Linguistic Society of America’s (LSA) 96th annual meeting. The paper, which was chosen as one of the highlights of the second day of the conference, offered a number of easily reproducible activities aimed at countering language discrimination in the classroom and beyond.

AWARD-WINNING FITR PROGRAM: A MODEL TO TEACH READING THROUGH INNOVATIVE COLLABORATION
February 7, 2022 - KCC’s Faculty Initiative on Teaching Reading (FITR) has won the 2022 Diana Hacker TYCA Award for Outstanding Programs in English for Two-Year Colleges and Teachers, presented annually by the Two-Year College English Association (TYCA) of the National Council of the Teachers of English. The award honors two-year college teachers and their colleges for exemplary programs that enhance students’ language learning, helping them to achieve their college, career, and personal goals. Impressed with the depth and scope of the program, the TYCA committee feels it is a model for innovative collaboration that can be replicated in other institutions.

January 13, 2022 — Former KCC provost and interim president, Dr. Michael Zibrin, died of pancreatic cancer on January 10. First hired in 1971 as the dean of faculty, he served the College in several capacities for three decades, including overseeing the growth of new departments and student enrollment.

December 16, 2021- Forty-six KCC students took the Nightingale Pledge at the fall hybrid nurses pinning ceremony on December 15, marking the end of their training as registered nurses. They are the first class to complete the entire nursing program during the pandemic. Nursing Department Chair Maggie Weeks congratulated students and faculty for adapting quickly to a virtual world when in-person classes were suspended. “Your journey as nursing students was definitely unprecedented."

May 19, 2021- Achieving the Dream mentioned KCC in their recent press release Kingsborough Community College is changing the conversation around student mothers. Kingsborough Community College, a Leader College of Distinction, is one of eight institutions participating in the College Success for Single Mothers Project. April 19, 2021- Tiffany Bogle, a member of the Kingsborough Community College women's basketball team, carries a 3.42 grade-point average as a Liberal Arts major with a concentration in English. Bogle has been impressive since her arrival to the Brooklyn campus, displaying leadership qualities on and off the court. March 27, 2017 –Kingsborough Community College (KCC) President Farley Herzek announced that the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has accredited Kingsborough Community College’s Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic program effective immediately. In 2013, the New York State Department of Health Bureau of EMS approved the KCC Paramedic Program, which is part of the Nursing Department, making it the first college-based EMS-Paramedic program in Brooklyn. Its first class graduated in 2015.

May 27, 2016 – Kingsborough Community College student Kate Maziarz has been awarded a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship worth up to $40,000 a year to complete a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. The Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is the largest private scholarship in the nation for students transferring from two-year community colleges to four-year institutions that award bachelor’s degrees.  Only 75 community college students were selected from a competitive nationwide pool this year. Maziarz is the 4th Kingsborough awardee in 3 years.
