Happy Boxing Day and Happy Kwanzaa!

12/26/2023

It is said that Boxing Day originated during the Victorian era from the practice of the upper class packing their leftover food and other goods in boxes to give it to the less fortunate.  While Kwanzaa which was established in 1966 by Maulana Karenga in the aftermath of the Watts Riots, was created as African American/Pan-African holiday to celebrate history, values, family, community and culture.

Kwanzaa is celebrated over seven days, with today December 26th being the first day. Each day represents a key principle that not only bears significance for the celebration of Kwanzaa.

Regardless of what or if you celebrate these holidays, may the spirit of service, giving back, unity (umoja), self-determination responsibility (kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics(ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba) and faith (imani) be with you always.
