Remembering 9/11: Our Work Together and Ahead

Dear College Community,

On Friday, we gathered as we typically do to reflect on 9/11, what the day took from us- loved ones and a sense of safety and security, and what the day gave us- heroes, the spirit of unity, and the resolve to make a difference.

We remember where we were on that day: at home getting ready for work, on the way to work, and for many you already at work at Kingsborough.  But no matter where we were, we felt the impact of the horror as we watched  TV and saw the cloud of smoke pouring from the towers; as we were frightened by the sounds of fighter jets  and overwhelmed by the cries of the sirens; and right here at Kingsborough standing in disbelief as charred paper fell from the sky. Were far away, yet in the midst of it all.

In the days that followed, workplaces like Kingsborough were spaces to talk about the horror we were experiencing; and this was also the place that we healed alongside our colleagues.

Today, as we reflect on the events and the aftermath of September 11, 2001, let us also remember the indomitable spirit of unity which filled and continue to fill the halls of Kingsborough.  It is our work together in higher ed that is the hope for the future.
