Accessibility Guidelines and Techniques
Digital accessibility ensures that websites, documents, and other digital content are usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. Kingsborough Community College is committed to providing an inclusive online experience by making our websites, digital resources, and published materials accessible to individuals with diverse abilities, including those who are blind, have low vision, are deaf, hard of hearing, or have mobility or cognitive disabilities.
Accessibility is both a legal requirement and a shared responsibility. Under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, federal agencies and organizations receiving federal funding must provide people with disabilities access to electronic and information technology that is comparable to the access available to others. In addition, accessibility is required under CUNY policy and supports the University's commitment to equity and inclusion.
Anyone creating or publishing digital content, including web pages, documents, images, videos, forms, presentations, and other online resources is responsible for ensuring that their content meets accessibility standards. This includes providing appropriate alternative text for images, using meaningful heading structures, creating accessible documents and PDFs, adding captions and transcripts for multimedia, ensuring sufficient color contrast, and designing content that is compatible with assistive technologies.
By incorporating accessibility into every stage of content creation, we help ensure that all members of our community have equal access to information and services.
