Dominic Wetzel Named 2023-2024 CPCP Fellow

Dominic Wetzel, an associate professor of sociology, has been appointed a CUNY Center for Place, Culture and Politics (CPCP) Faculty Fellow. Each year, CPCP selects six CUNY faculty members and six Grad Center doctoral students who explore a specific theme through research and a weekly seminar. This year's theme is "The State. Abolitionist? Fascist? Communist? Bourgeois?" Wetzel’s project, “Re-Imagining the State: Dominionism or Democracy?,” examines how individual liberties and democratic ideals are impacted by religious nationalism, specifically Christian dominionism in the United States. His work focuses on the tension between community needs and individual autonomy, exploring how modernity and religious beliefs intersect and influence issues like reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. Wetzel, who grew up in a religious family and identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizes the relevance of his work to CUNY's diverse community, grappling with issues of religious tolerance, identity, and freedom.
