Clarissa Tejada

Admissions Counselor | Admissions Information Center

Clarissa Tejada joined Kingsborough Community College’s Admissions Information Center as an admissions counselor in January. She recruits students, gives campus tours, assists with applications, and answers questions about the college.

A Bushwick native proud of her Dominican roots, Clarissa saw working at Kingsborough as a chance to give back to her community. “I’ve always been passionate about education and helping others reach their potential, especially underrepresented students,” she reflected. “I want to be that person in my community who inspires and guides people to apply and get into college the way I was when I was growing up.”

Originally planning to enter nursing or become a psychologist, Clarissa earned a bachelor's degree in human development from Binghamton University. She served as a student ambassador, offering incoming students tours of the campus and providing them with information about the university, something she found very rewarding. “After graduating, I was able to combine my love for education with empowering students when I worked in human resources at El Puente in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.”

Fluent in Spanish, Clarissa has found that language can sometimes be a barrier for students when it comes to applying to college or meeting deadlines once accepted. She believes admissions counseling is a good fit for her because she is able to put her people skills to work. “I’m able to support students trying to navigate the application process and connect them with opportunities that align with their goals.” She looks forward to easing students' transition to college, connecting them with resources, and becoming a mentor.

Outside work, Clarissa enjoys dancing, singing, and spending time with family. “I'm very friendly, so don't be afraid to stop and say hi or ask any questions.”
