2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting
Kingsborough Community College Recognized as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting
Brooklyn, NY – Kingsborough Community College (KCC) is one of 471 colleges and universities that have been recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting. The ALL IN Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting recognizes colleges and universities for outstanding efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation. The colleges and universities were recognized by ALL IN for completing four core actions:
- Participating in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge
- Sharing 2022 NSLVE Reports with campus voting data with ALL IN
- Developing and submitting a 2024 democratic engagement action plan with ALL IN
- Having a current signatory to ALL IN’s Higher Education Presidents’ Commitment to Full Student Voter Participation.
"At Kingsborough Community College, we're proud to have created an environment where civic engagement is woven into the fabric of campus life. We think that giving our students the tools they need to be engaged citizens is important, along with achieving academic success,” noted Interim President Suri Duitch. “Our students aren't just preparing for careers—they're preparing to be active voices in our democracy. This recognition from ALL IN validates our ongoing commitment to ensuring every student understands their vote counts."
“The research is clear: colleges and universities that make intentional efforts to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement have higher campus voter registration and voter turnout rates. This year we saw more colleges than ever before step up their efforts to ensure that their students were registered and ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “These Most Engaged Campuses are setting the standard for nonpartisan civic engagement work for colleges and universities across the country.”
Kingsborough has had a civic engagement graduation requirement since 2013, a notable move for a community college at the time. Outside the classroom, the College’s Student Union & Intercultural Center (SU&IC), launched in 2016, develops programming that complements academic programs, and fosters intercultural understanding, leadership and civic engagement.
SU&IC ran the nonpartisan KCC Votes campaign, which registered more than 200 new voters and coordinated voter education events with partners Ignite, GenVotes and the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition.
In addition, they conducted six participatory budgeting workshops in which 175 students developed 58 proposals for NYC's $3.5 million "The People's Money" initiative, an annual citywide participatory budgeting initiative program run by the NYC Civic Engagement Commission which allows community members propose projects to implement in their communities and then vote to decide how to spend part of the city's budget. To highlight immigrant voices, SU&IC partnered with United We Dream and launched a collaboration with ImmSchools to support K-12 immigrant students. They also unveiled a new Interfaith Room where they hold weekly dialogue sessions.
“It is crucial for students to understand that they have power and agency to advocate for the issues that matter to them. They don't need a prestigious degree or a specific background - their experiences and their skills can lend themselves effectively to making a change in public life,” said Helen-Margaret Nasser, SU&IC director. “I want students to know that if there are matters that concern them to not wait for someone to make a change. Our students can get involved, connect, learn, and lead.”
