Leading the Future of Surgical Technology: Johnson Named to
NYAST Board of Directors

Tyronne Johnson, assistant professor of surgical technology and chair of the KCC Department of Allied Health, Mental Health and Human Services, has been appointed to the board of the New York State Association of Surgical Technologists (NYAST) for a two-year term. He currently serves on the National AST Educational and Professional Standards Committee. Johnson, who is in the first year of a three-year term with the national committee, called these appointments “a meaningful affirmation of my commitment to the profession.” He explained, “It’s an opportunity to advocate on a national scale for surgical technologists and help elevate the standards of patient care and professional development across the country.”

The NYAST Board of Directors oversees the organization’s operations, advocates for surgical technologists and patient safety, manages finances, and helps set policies at the state level. The Educational and Professional Standards Committee works nationally to develop strategies that enhance entry-level surgical technology education, review core curriculum, and promote continuing education and professional standards in the field. “Being appointed is both humbling and motivating,” said Johnson. “It reaffirms my commitment to elevating the standards of our profession and supporting surgical technologists in their pursuit of excellence.”

Johnson’s presence on the board mean students will benefit from someone who is committed to ensuring they have access to the best possible education and are prepared for successful careers. It also means Kingsborough Community College will have a direct hand in shaping professional standards in New York and the future of surgical technology education. As he shared, “I’m passionate about ensuring surgical technologists have access to high-quality training and resources, and that our voices are heard in legislative and healthcare policy discussions.”
