Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: Kingsborough Community College and PTPS Program Build Pathways to Public Service

Kingsborough Community College (KCC) has partnered with the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Pathways to Public Service Program (PTPS), a program that provides Minority Serving Institution students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be viable candidates in their pursuit of careers in public service through paid internships and entry-level positions.
The PTPS program's mission is to develop a pipeline of diverse, qualified, and highly motivated students to become the next generation of public servants providing effective health and human services and fostering advances in medicine, public health, and social services through paid internships and entry-level positions.
Kingsborough’s Center for Career Development and Experiential Learning will collaborate with PTPS to:
- publicize information about paid internships, entry-level job announcements, and upcoming events to the campus community,
- partner with PTPS to host virtual and/or in-person recruitment events, and
- identify students to serve as campus ambassadors for the PTPS program.
KCC students who volunteer to become PTPS campus ambassadors will receive one-on-one coaching assistance from Health and Human Services personnel on pursuing a career in public service, help with resume writing and preparing for interviews, and have elevated exposure to hiring officials.
To qualify, they must commit to a term of one academic year and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. The campus ambassadors will be charged with disseminating information sent by the PTPS Team by posting about the program on social media at least once a week and recruiting 20 students per month to the mailing list. “We want to ensure that our students are not only gaining skills for the workforce but also giving back to their communities,” said Simone Rodriguez, vice president of Workforce Development, Continuing Education and Strategic Partnerships. “Collaborating with the Pathways to Public Service Program will give KCC students access to opportunities that can advance their careers in the health and human services fields.”
