Incoming KCC Freshman Is 2021 Class Of Gucci Changemakers North America Scholar

High school graduation day is exciting enough, but adding to it, an email that you were chosen by Gucci to receive a college scholarship and mentorship – well, it’s a day that Lacey Garza said she will always remember.

“I got the email on my graduation day, and I was so excited,” said Lacey, 17, a Bensonhurst resident who graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School and will be majoring in fashion and business as a freshman at Kingsborough Community College in the fall. “It’s a great opportunity. I will be learning from people who are working in this field and giving valuable information. It will help me in the long run.”

Earlier this month, Gucci announce the 2021 Class of Gucci Changemakers North America Scholars, furthering its commitment to creating positive change within the fashion industry and empowering the next generation of creative talent. The 22 scholarship recipients come from diverse backgrounds and are pursuing various careers within fashion at community colleges, undergraduate colleges, and universities. They will receive an academic scholarship for up to $20,000, mentorship and virtual internship opportunities through Gucci America. Over 450 students applied for the scholarship.

Antoine Phillips, vice president of brand and culture engagement, stated: “We are honored to announce the selection of these talented and creative students from all backgrounds and regions in North America. They represent HBCUs, community colleges, fashion schools, and non-fashion schools alike. Their diverse points of views embody the future of not only fashion, but creative industries as a whole. We look forward to engaging with all of our scholars over the coming months ahead.”

Lacey said her interest in studying fashion dates to her middle school years. “I first wanted to do fashion design but then I thought, ‘how am I going to put it out in the world? I’m going to study business as well.’” One of her role models in fashion is the great Karl Otto Lagerfeld, creator of Chanel. “He was one of the first people who inspired me. He was very creative, successful and I liked his personality. I want to be like him,” Lacey said.

The 6-week Gucci Changemakers virtual summer program helps educate student awardees about the career paths available within the fashion industry. It includes engagement with all departments across Gucci North America, Gucci corporate mentor assignment and skill-building workshops.

Although the Gucci North America Changemakers Scholarship Program is for one year, recipients can apply again. The next round of applications will open in the fall of 2021.
