Emphasis on correct pronunciation through intensive oral practice, use of the Language Laboratory and audiovisual materials, acquisition of basic vocabulary and the elements of grammar for conversation, comprehension, reading, and writing.

Romance begins with language. Italian 100 is an introductory course to this beautiful Romance language. Here you will enhance your ability to expand your knowledge and appreciation for the arts, music and cuisine that are a part of Italian culture; you will also gain a fundamental understanding of the language of Italy. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to experience this culture on a hands-on basis by participating in the many and varied activities of the Italian Club.

The goal of this course is to give students the basic competence to communicate in Italian and to be able to write and read letters, short stories, magazine articles, menus and maps. The opportunity to achieve this competence is made available to the student through traditional classroom work and is enhanced through laboratory audio and visual material, music and film, all in conjunction with our textbook Ciao, 7th Edition, by Carla Larese Riga & Chiaria Maria Dal Martello. This text is augmented by a CD-ROM, audio CD and on-line exercises.

A one-semester course for students without previous training in the language, or, as indicated by the Language Placement Examination score. Emphasis on correct pronunciation through intensive oral practice, use of the Language Laboratory and audio- visual materials, acquisition of basic vocabulary and the elements of grammar for conversation, comprehension, reading and writing. 
NOT OPEN TO NATIVE SPEAKERS. 

This course is designed for beginners and carries no pre-requisites. However, if you have studied Italian for more than two years or speak the language at home, you must take the Foreign Language Placement Examination that is administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures. The outcome of this test will reflect your proficiency in Italian and will allow us to place you accurately. Beginning with the Alps in the northern regions, through the Lombard plains, across the wonder of its historic cities and the Mediterranean vistas of Sicily, Italy is a country of diversity and splendor. As is the Italian language. Listen to opera, read its literature, experience the romance: Italian is wonderful to speak and a delight to hear. From old Rome to the modern Italian Republic, Italy has played a vital role in Western culture and today almost 60 million people speak Italian. People who speak this language have created some of the world's greatest works of art, literature and music.

When you complete Italian 2 you will have broadened your horizons in both the language and the culture of Italy. Here you will continue to develop language skills that were attained in Italian 1 through listening, reading , speaking and writing; you will gain the confidence to speak the language with more fluency and will be able to engage in longer and more complex conversations in and out of the classroom.

This course uses the same textbook as Italian 1: Ciao, 7th Edition, by Carla Larese Riga & Chiaria Maria Dal Martello, and is enriched by a state of the art language laboratory, weekly professor's office hours, cultural events and free tutoring; these create a wide range of experiences and activities for our students.

Progressive development of language skills, based on foundations established in elementary Italian. Grammar review supplemented by readings of modern Italian literature. Prerequisite: It 2 or acceptable Language Placement Examination score. 

This Italian 3 course is a progressive study, a journey into listening and speaking skills by practicing and personalizing situation that will make your venture exiting as well as enjoyable.  The process of thinking, reflecting and acting will not only be a requirement, but it will also be an exotic adventure into a new culture.

Students will be encouraged to participate and respond to simple questions about their life, their family, and their recent activities through class presentations and participations.  Here students will introduce themselves and create a virtual scenario that entails asking for directions or simply requesting information.

Students will be encouraged to practice what they have learned through class activities, imitating real life situations such as traveling, ordering meals, discussing school or work schedules.  Daily class practice and student interaction will improve their verbal performance to a confident and comfortable level.

Prerequisite: IT 2 or acceptable Language Placement Examination score

Advanced grammar, composition and reading of modern Italian authors.
Prerequisite: It 3 or acceptable Language Placement Examination score

Practice in conversational patterns and basic vocabulary leading to fluency in everyday situations.
Prerequisite: It 2 or three years of high school Italian or Department permission

For students who do not necessarily speak Italian, a study, analysis and discussion of the most outstanding literary productions of Italy, from the Middle Ages to contemporary texts. The course is taught entirely in English.
Prerequisite: ENG 12

Study of  the most outstanding films and film scripts in the Italian cinema, from the silent era and Fascist period to the present, with emphasis on post-war neorealism and the major directors of the sixties and seventies. Films in Italian with English subtitles. Instruction is in English with a view toward developing an appreciation of the history, art and aesthetics of Italian cinema.

Independent study of Italian is developed individually between student and faculty member and must be approved by the Department.

This course is of a topical and pilot nature and is designed to meet the immediate needs and interests of various student populations. It is offered for a maximum of two semesters.
