Writing Intensive Classes: FAQs for Students
Who is required to take a writing intensive course before graduating?
In writing intensive sections, faculty assign writing to help students think more deeply about course content, make connections to their own experience and ideas, reflect on their learning processes, and communicate effectively. These sections are capped at 25 students, allowing for more individualized instruction. Students write informally about course content and reading, and revision is a required part of formal writing assignments.
Writing intensive courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters only. They are not offered in the winter or summer modules. Note that there are a limited number of writing intensive sections offered during the evening, and none during the weekend.
Every department and most programs at KCC offer writing intensive sections of their regular course offerings. A writing intensive section will be at least a 3 credit course.
Regular KCC faculty who have taken special training in the use of writing in their discipline teach these courses.
Students can go to the schedule of classes at www.kbcc.cuny.edu/classschedule for a list of writing intensive sections offered each semester. When searching, students should select “Writing Intensive” as a Course Attribute.
If a student has successfully completed a writing intensive course, they should be able to see it on CUNYFirst. Students should go to “Student Portal” and then click on “Degreeworks.” Students can also speak to their advisor if they are unsure about whether or not they have met the requirement.
