A sampling of TRiO functions and activities

ATM All Things that Matter (College Knowledge)
TRiO offers weekly non-cognitive skills workshops to improve college navigation, syllabi
review, library research, and so on.
Coaching
TRiO helps students identify a starting point to complete assignments and strategize
for the week. Coaching ensures that TRiO students stay on track and perform optimally.
Counseling
Counselors are your primary contact. They advise, coordinate, negotiate, and counsel around all areas which impede persistence.
Counselors employ the problem solving model with the over-arching objective of successful
performance.
Academic Advisement
Students and TRiO counselors shape semester schedules with consideration of financial aid, employment,
time preferences, among other variables. TRiO counselors know about new financial aid and academic regulations.
Tutorials
Tutorials assist students who are 1) re-taking entrance exams; 2) motivated to improve
grades; 3) invested in critical thinking development; and 4) want to improve technology
skills.
Looking Glass for Struggling Academic Writers is a TRiO tutorial project with the reading and writing center which addresses underdeveloped reading and writing abilities. Students work in mini-groups. LG has been remarkably successful moving students out of remediation and developing competencies for future reading and writing assignments.
Financial Aid
TRiO works with the financial aid office to ensure that students complete their annual
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on time; the TAP office (Tuition
Assistance Program) for TAP eligibility and the career/transfers/scholarship office
to ensure awareness of additional financial opportunities.
Financial Literacy
TRiO supports proficiency in money management, knowledge of entitlements, skills for planning
graduate education, and ways to avoid heavy debt. We work with Access Resource Center,
the college resource for providing financial literacy education.
Transfers to Four Year Colleges
TRiO counselors monitor all activities pertaining to transfers and ensure that timely applications
are completed in a timely manner.
Career Activities
TRiO offers career workshops and job search tips. We encourage meetings with members of
their respective department for information interviews and taking on-line career tests
in the career office for a better understanding of their interests and abilities.
TRiO facilitates internships so that students graduate with experience in their major.
Cultural Activities
TRiO links with the wide array of cultural, club, and civic opportunities on campus. TRiO students are active on campus.
