Shot-Caller

Dear KCC Students,

In the 1932 World Series, the New York Yankees faced off against the Chicago Cubs.    As they entered game 3 of the series, the Yankees were already leading the series with two wins. The third game took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago.    In the fifth inning, with one player already out, Babe Ruth took his place at the plate. He had two balls and one strike and was up to bat once more while he was being heckled and booed by the crowed.    Amid all this distraction, he pointed to centerfield and ended up hitting a home run to . . .    you guessed it: centerfield!    Some regard this as one of the greatest homeruns in history.    There is a lot of debate as to whether Babe Ruth actually pointed to centerfield, what he was pointing at, and whether he was pointing at all.    Yet there are legions of others that believe that he most definitely called his shot.

As you prepare to take your final exams, I need you to block out distractions and   call your shot .    If you have been diligent about your studies as Babe Ruth was about baseball, then I know you will do well because this past semester, you focused on your school work and you were attentive in class (first base). You sought and received academic support when you needed it (second base); and you participated in your classes, took copious notes and you completed all your assignments (third base). Now as you get ready take your finals, you are headed for the home stretch with a homerun.

The New York Yankees went on to win the 1932 World Series.    They swept the Chicago Cubs in 4 games, not just because of Babe Ruth, but because of the entire team and all the fans that believed in them.

I want you to know that we believe in you and the entire Kingsborough team is rooting for you to ace your exams so you can move on to the next phase in your academic journey.    Time for you to knock it out the park.    I wish you the best of luck on your finals!
