Rain don't stop no carnival

Dear KCC Students,

For many years I have managed to avoid coming to Brooklyn on Labor Day.  But yesterday I found myself not only in Brooklyn, but in the West Indian Day Parade.  I was invited by one of KCC’s great partners the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to join them as they feted down the Parkway. 

I am no stranger to parades and carnivals.  I was born and raised on St. Croix, USVI and I have feted in many parades in my time.  But yesterday was different,  because although the Virgin Islands itself is a great melting pot of Caribbean nationalities, in St. Croix we are all about the VI Flag. However, on Eastern Parkway there was a kaleidoscope of flags, each representing many different islands and countries.   It was a beautiful to see and was a wonderful representation of the rich diversity of the city.

As I feted, and enjoyed all the sights and sounds around me,  I thought about the diversity of experiences that each person at the parade had.  I know too that although each of you have unique experiences, challenges, and paths to take, that as Kingsborough students you all have the same goal: earning your college degree.

And this is why I am writing to you today.  Our records show that you have not registered to date.

They say rain don’t stop no carnival, so I know whatever challenges you may be experiencing will not stop you from accomplishing your goal.  So, if you are not able to enroll this semester, I have every confidence that you will continue to make completing your degree a priority.

Remember registration ends on Thursday and classes start on Friday.
