President’s Weekly Messages to Students

HIP HOP DON'T STOP.

Hip Hop Dont Stop

Wednesday, August 23, 2023

Dear KCC Students,

One thing for certain, and two things for sure:  I love old school hip hop, I believe in your success, and we are here to help you to succeed.

KCC students, if you don't know, this year is the 50th anniversary of the birth of Hip Hop.  Hip Hop might have born in The Bronx, but we all know it was raised in Brooklyn, right? 😊

I remember the first song I fell in love with; it was Rapper's Delight by the SugarHill Gang.  And since that first song, there are lots of artists and songs that I count among my favorites.  As part of the celebration of Hip Hop, there have been a host of concerts across the city. I was excited to be at many of them, in the mix of it all, moving, grooving and singing along with thousands of people from every race and walk of life.  To kick it off last year, I went to a Lincoln Center Orchestral tribute to Biggie Smalls! Imagine that! And I even had the opportunity to check out the Universal Hip Hop Museum in The Bronx! Imagine that a museum dedicated to Hip Hop!

And can you believe that Yankee Stadium held a birthday party for Hip Hop!?, and WuTang, Snoop Dog, Dougie Fresh, Nas, Lauryn Hill, A Boogie wit Da Hoodie and so many artists were there to help celebrate.   Even Kool Herc, who is credited with creating Hip Hop, was there as well.  I know that in his wildest dreams and as he looked out over the thousands of people in Yankee Stadium, that he never thought like Biggie Smalls once said, that Hip Hop would make it this far, but it has.

And one thing I know for sure is that you will make it far, too.  You have already started your journey towards earning your college degree, keep going. Don't stop.

Some of you might be experiencing challenges and issues that are affecting your ability to register.  Email me at president@kbcc.cuny.edu (with your student ID#  and telephone #) and let me know what the issue is so we can see how we can best advise and support you.

Unlike many of the other CUNY colleges, our fall semester starts on September 8th, so there is still time to connect with your advisor and register for classes. You can also click here for more information: https://www.kbcc.cuny.edu/session/index.html.

I hope to hear from you, but most of all we hope to see you this fall.

President Schrader
