Chanel Bishop

Assistant Dean of Advisement

Chicago native Chanel Bishop has joined Kingsborough Community College’s academic affairs department as our new assistant dean of advisement.

Having previously served as associate dean of student services and transfer center director for the City Colleges of Chicago, an advisor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a career development counselor for a non-profit in Chicago, she moved to New York City three weeks ago. “I love the work that community colleges do and had planned to move to NYC this year,” she shared. “I wanted an opportunity to work with a community college that was at the forefront of excellence and would allow me to support students and make an impact within student-facing departments, and I was impressed that Kingsborough had been recently recognized for its work by the Aspen Institute.”

Once a first-generation college student herself, Chanel is passionate about helping students navigate higher education. “As a first-generation college student and student of color who attended a large public institution, I remember feeling a bit lost in the shuffle,” she recalled. “There was so much I didn’t know and so many things to navigate.”

Building on her background in student services, advisement, and career development, in her new role, Chanel will oversee Kingsborough's advisement areas, specifically the advising academies, ASAP (Accelerated Study in Associate Programs) and transfer. “I'm looking forward to supporting the work my team is already doing to enhance the student experience.”

Originally planning to teach high school English, Chanel holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana, a master's degree in educational leadership with a higher education concentration from DePaul University, a master’s degree in human services and counseling from Roosevelt University, and a doctorate in higher education and organizational change from Benedictine University.

She is the mother of 4-year-old twins and enjoys traveling with her family
