This colorful ensemble brings to life the rich history and explosive power of traditional Afro-Brazilian dance as well the energy and vibrancy of modern street life in Bahia. Nego Gato (“Black Cat”) showcases dances created by African slaves who worked in the sugar plantations. These include capoeira, a martial art form disguised as a dance that features spectacular acrobatics, and the whirling, machete-wielding maculela. Accompanied by live percussion, Nego Gato also performs the more spiritual movements of the condomble as well as sexy sambas and the meringue.
