The Interview

The job interview gives the potential employee and potential employer a chance to learn more about each other. The interview is also your chance to show an employer what he or she will get if you're hired. That is why it is essential to be well prepared for the job interview. Preparing means knowing about the industry, the employer, and yourself. It means paying attention to details like personal appearance, punctuality, and demeanor. To be successful at interviews you need to fine-tune your interview skills.

Tips for a Successful Interview

  • Plan Ahead - Do a little homework! Research the company and the position if possible, as well, the people you will meet with at the interview. Review your work experiences. Be ready to support past career accomplishments with specific information targeted toward the companies needs. Have your facts ready!
  • Dress appropriately- Wear a suit, preferably a neutral color such as black, grey or blue.
  • Arrive early for your interview. Plan for your traveling ahead of time.
  • Maintain eye contact. Smile and be polite. Lean forward and have an open posture. (Do not cross your arms or legs)
  • Never make negative comments about former employers.
  • Listen and adapt. Be sensitive to the style of the interviewer. Pay attention to those details of dress, office furniture, and general decor which will afford helpful clues to assist you in tailoring your presentation. Be positive and confident but not arrogant.
  • Try to keep nervous mannerisms to a minimum (i.e, pen tapping, leg shaking, nervous laughter, etc.)
  • Don’t smoke or chew gum.
  • Answer questions without rambling.
  • Don’t bring up salary or benefits in first interview.
  • Most importantly PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!
