College President Dr. Claudia V. Schrader
welcomes you to KCC.
Are you ready for Fall 2021 at KCC? Whether you’re learning online, hybrid, or in-person, we are ready for you, and have created our Fall Session 2021 Checklist so you're ready, too. KCC is providing you with the best possible academic experience to get you closer to your educational goals.
KCC is committed to taking the proper safety measures as we follow guidance and safety guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health. Our Fall 2021 plans include limited capacity on campus, and requires mandatory daily health screenings, appropriate social distancing, protective face coverings, and continuous cleaning and disinfection of the facilities.
We encourage you to check out the resources available and let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. Please revisit our webpage for updates.
- Be prepared for your courses. Review resources and support for online learning during the Fall 2021.

The “Are You Ready?” online readiness course is designed to prepare you for taking an online course. Whether your courses are hybrid, synchronous or asynchronous, this course will cover a variety of topics to help you navigate in an online environment. The “Are You Ready?" course can be found in your Blackboard account under “My Organizations”. You will receive a certificate once it is completed.
How do you know if your course is online, hybrid or in-person?
If you are already registered, log into your CUNYFirst Student Self-Service Center to view your schedule and the instruction mode.
If you have not yet registered log into the course search in CUNYFirst to search for courses that you need to take.
There are two types of on-line classes: Asynchronous and Synchronous
- Asynchronous classes appear on the schedule without any meeting days or times and list the instruction
mode as “online”. You are not required to participate in live classes or live discussions
but must submit all work by assigned deadlines provided by the instructor. The instructor
may also provide live interaction opportunities, such as office hours.
- Synchronous classes appear on the schedule with set meeting days and times and list the instruction mode
as “online”. Students are required to be present (virtually) at the same time. These
classes meet in real-time and students must commit to being available and able to
log-in, and stay logged-in, during the entire time of the class, as scheduled.
Hybrid classes appear on the schedule with set meeting days and times and list locations for class meeting times (classroom, off-campus). There will also be additional online class components. The instruction mode appears as “hybrid”.
In-person classes appear on the schedule with set meeting days and times and list the location for the class (classroom, off-campus). The instruction mode is listed as “in person”.
Consider the following questions when you are making a choice between synchronous and asynchronous classes:
- Can you make a time commitment to being available at specific times, with a quiet
place to work and access to wifi? Or do you need the flexibility of getting work done
at times that work best for you as long as it gets done by the deadline?
- Do you learn well with more or less direct interaction with the instructor and classmates?
Do you prefer to participate in class?
- Do you have strong time-management skills and can keep yourself on track to meet deadlines with less regular interaction or do you need the stability of regular class meetings to keep you on track?
