Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling

The course prepares you for the state certification examination and work in the field. It may also include a 300-hour supervised internship at a program licensed by New York State - Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS-OASAS). Successful completion of these six courses is required to earn the CASAC Trainee Certificate.

SAC 02000 Intro to Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Counseling $540

This course provides an overview of the major concepts and theories of chemical dependency. Students will be introduced to the physical, psychological and legal aspects of alcohol and substance abuse. Counselor qualifications and skills will be examined for those considering a career in this field.

SAC 02200 Counseling Techniques
in the Substance Abuse Field I $540

This course provides an overview and practical application of techniques utilized in the field. You will be instructed in communication skills necessary to engage the substance abuse client from the basic screening process through discharge planning. Students will be introduced to the major evaluation instruments utilized in this field and learn to develop and evaluate client treatment plans and assessment histories. Prerequisite: SAC 02000

SAC 02400 Counseling Techniques in the Substance Abuse Field II $540

Continuation of Counseling Techniques I. Understanding and leading groups to address topics, i.e., personality and behavioral problems, HIV, AIDS, relapse prevention and vocational/educational concerns will be addressed.
Prerequisite: SAC 02200

SAC 02600 Confidentiality, Ethics and the Counselor/Client Relationship in Substance Abuse Counseling $540
Wed 10:20-11:20am and Thur 10:20am-12:30pm March 2-May 26 OR Tue 6:30-9:30pm March 1-May 31
Confidentiality regulations taken from both Federal and State law for the protection of substance abuse clients are discussed with emphasis on disclosure exceptions and the proper handling of written and verbal communications. Ethical standards written for CASAC’s are explored with application to sample cases and exercises. Course requires internship.
Prerequisite: SAC 02000 Co-requisite: SAC 02200

SAC 02800 Approaches to Treatment: Varieties of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Modalities $540
Wed 6:30-9:30pm March 2-May 25
Because of the wide variety of modalities existing in the substance abuse field, this course provides the students with an overview of the settings in which clients may be placed according to treatment needs and substance abuse history.
Prerequisite: SAC 02000 Co-requisite: SAC 02200

SAC 03000 Compulsive Gambling - Treatment and Prevention $720
Thur 6-10pm March 3-May 26
Students develop an understanding of gambling as a compulsive behavior often associated with substance abuse. The historical phenomenon of wagering and its prevalence today as a societal problem is explored. Clinical and professional intervention with individuals and the family, as well as prevention methods and techniques are stressed.
