With Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, and Women’s Tennis seasons coming to an end, we would like to congratulate all four sports in qualifying for a postseason game. All the student-athletes and coaches have accomplished a great deal.
The Men’s Cross Country team led by Head Coach Dave Loobie, 2007 recipient of the NJCAA Women’s Track Coach of the Year Award, can be best described as magnificent. Following a second place finish in the Regional Championship, the entire Men’s Team ran a seasonal and personal best to capture the CUNY Championship at Van Cortlandt Park. Jevaughn Coachman Bush led the way for us with a seasonal best of 32:20.00 to end his Cross Country career as a Wave. Freshman sensation Derrick Davis also ran a seasonal best of 32:50.00 for five miles. As they come to the end this season, they are getting ready to start Indoor Season and hoping the success from the past season carries over into the next.
After a thrilling season, the Men’s Soccer Team led by Franco Legovich, was defeated in the quarter-finals of the Region XV Tournament by number two seeded Nassau Community College. Even with this loss, there are many positive things this team will take with them going into next year. For one, this is the first Region XV Tournament appearance for the Soccer Team since 1999 and second straight year as CUNY Championship runner-up. Also, Daniel Zorrilla and Tsion Thomas were named as Honorable Mentions for the 2007 All-Region Team.
The Women’s Volleyball Team finished third in CUNY for the 2007 season. They were defeated by Hostos Community College in the semi-finals for the CUNY Championship which took place on October 29, 2007 at Kingsborough Community College. Coach Paul Watson is extremely proud of his team’s competitiveness finishing with a 4-4 CUNY record despite losing four starters midway through the season.
The 2007 Women’s Tennis Team finished in sixth place at the Region XV Tournament at West Point. Co-captain and number one singles player Herschella Reid advanced to the semi-finals. The number three doubles team of Johanna Wu and Szaida Miller won their first round match and advanced to the semi-finals in dramatic fashion. Head Coach Barry Goldsmith admired the progress his team showed improving with each match from the end of the season until the Regionals. With a year under their belts, he thinks next year’s team will be a force to reckon with.
Stay tuned for the upcoming Men's and Women's Basketball seasons which will be kicked off with a Homecoming Pep Rally on Monday November 5, 2007 at 3pm in the cafeteria.
The Men’s Basketball Team, led by Head Coach Hassan Duncombe, anticipates a return to the CUNY Championship and Region XV Tournament. With numerous of recruits, he believes this will be his best season yet.
The Women’s Basketball Team, led by former WNBA player Katasha Artis, is anxious to begin collegiate coaching with the Wave. She is ready to spread her knowledge of the game onto her team.
We hope to see you at the Pep Rally and especially at our games. If anyone is interested in playing for a team, stop by G110 in the Gym Building. Thanks for all your support and
Goooooooooooooooooo Wave!!!
