Department of Biological Sciences
Opportunities

Students serious about exploring the biological sciences can begin their career plans in our department. Students can complete either of two programs and become employed in two allied health career areas without transferring to other schools. These programs are Professional Nursing and Physical Therapist Assistant.

We also offer additional Allied Health "transfer-option" programs that prepare the motivated student for entry into professional schools after graduation from Kingsborough: Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, and Occupational Therapy. Physical Therapy professional schools can be entered after earning a Bachelor's Degree.

Our students are accepted at local professional schools such as Downstate and Long Island University as well as schools around the country. As a result of several federally-funded grants, students have the opportunity to complete their Associates in Science degree (A.S.) and then transfer to a senior college to pursue careers in Biomedical Research, Health and Nutrition Sciences, or Education (teaching science in the NYC public school system).

Further information about these programs may be found under "Special Programs."
Kingsborough's Nursing Department utilizes our anatomy and physiology, and microbiology courses to prepare students for training toward the R.N. with an Associates in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree. Some students take our pre-nursing courses for transfer to 4-year (B.S.N.) Nursing degree programs at The College of Staten Island, Hunter College, Downstate Medical Center, and other institutions having professional nursing programs.

Our department offers a 2-year Physical Therapist Assistant program leading to an A.A.S. Degree.
The traditional biology major can utilize the A.S. Degree awarded from Kingsborough to transfer to 4-year colleges to pursue the Bachelor of Science degree. This degree may be utilized for science teaching at the junior or senior high school level (with an education minor), to pursue Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College, and to prepare for graduate work leading to careers in basic research in the biological sciences.
