Writing Assignment Tips

KCC's new Assignment Lab, located in M205, M206 and M207 (MAC Building), is open during the Fall and Spring semesters. Writing Fellows are available for consultation on assignments for students in both WI and Linked courses as well as in other college classes. Appointments can be made by calling the Reading and Writing Center at 718-368-5405, or by stopping by Room L219 and asking for the Assignment Lab!

"Greatest Hits" Writing Assignments and Tips

•  Make Students Accountable.

Students are often compelled to do assigned readings when they must also write about them. Reading-linked assignments can be simple, and do not have to be collected or read by the professor. Students may be asked to write a paragraph about the relevance of a particular reading and/or the meaning of a specific work for them personally. (See the section on “informal writing” on the “What is WAC at Kingsborough?” webpage.)

•  Improve Reading Comprehension.

A reading can be previewed in class before students are actually assigned to do it. Students can also be shown how to skim an article before reading it, and be asked to focus on a specific kind of information in the reading, like evidence that explains a popular myth, helps to answer a historical question, or explains a particular phenomenon.

•  Respond to Student Work.

Longer assignments can be treated as works-in-progress, so that students understand that writing and thinking are processes, and that revisions lead to clearer, more focused and better final products. Positive feedback from professors can guide students into becoming motivated and ultimately doing a good job.
