WAC and the CPEThe writing and thinking skills that WAC seeks to develop are also important for students to pass the CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE). The CPE is designed to measure college skills across the disciplines, making preparation for the test the responsibility of the entire academic community. To be confident of success, KCC students need frequent exposure to the requirements of timed writing, analysis of competing ideas in two or more texts and critical interpretation of demanding prose as well as graphic representations of information. The CPE was first administered in the 2000/2001 academic year to students who were admitted in September of 1999 or later, and who had already completed forty-five (45) credits. The test is administered four times a year and students have three opportunities to pass. There are two parts to the exam. Task I, Analytic Reading and Writing, requires students to write a focused essay comparing and contrasting ideas from two related reading selections, one of which is given to students ahead of time for at-home study. Task II, Analyzing and Integrating Material from Graphs and Text, requires students to compare and assess information presented in a chart or graph plus a short reading. If you would like to sign-up for further help regarding the CPE, please call the Reading and Writing Center (L219) at 718-368-5405. KCC also has a site for the CPE: |
