Work with Students

Working within what we call the Assignment Lab, Fellows offer consultations to Kingsborough students who are working on a writing assignment.

Our Assignment Lab has a variety of functions within the WAC Program. Working regularly with students enrolled in writing intensive and Honors sections will provide Fellows with,

  • An understanding of the challenges KCC students face in completing an assignment.
  • A view of the range of student writing in the community college and across disciplines.
  • Feedback on how a specific assignment is working for students.
  • Training in conferencing: what works best in the one-on-one teaching context.

It is our hope that Fellows will be much better equipped to advise faculty on assignment design after they have had such intensive experience at the learner end. Such training in taking the developmental perspective on learning is also likely to have long range impact on Fellows as future faculty.

Assignment Lab work is supported through a training program in the Fall and workshops on student writing samples in the Spring.
