  ESL Counseling Services
Welcome Students!
We want you to know that there are academic counselors available to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have pertaining to your academics here at KCC. As an ESL student, often times you are not only new to the college but also new to the country. We want you to know that we can assist you with many issues related to this transitional period in your life. We can help with the following: selecting courses, deciding on a major, providing career guidance and advisement, assisting with registration, answering questions about the CUNY assessment test and the CPE, study skills, time management, improving confidence and communication skills, building up your resources and networking while at KCC, test anxiety issues and much more

ESL PLacement Levels
Typically, there are three ESL levels for which a student can be placed based on their CUNY placement exam: ESL 07 (10 equated credits), ESL 09 (10 equated credits), and ESL 91 ( 8 equated credits)

What is an Equated Credit?
According to the KCC handbook, an equated credit is figured on the basis of the number of class hours per week which are taken in required developmental courses for which actual credit is not allowed. For example, Math R2-o credits, 5 contact hours= 5 equated credits. These credits can be applied towards your full time status. They are not counted in determining your index or toward the total credits required for your degree.

Intensive ESL program
Students who are placed at any level of ESL (07, 09, or 91) can opt to enroll in the Intensive ESL program. This program is for incoming freshmen students. Students in this program are placed by ESL level and their ESL class is linked with other courses such as an introduction to psychology (PSY 11) and Introdction to Health (HPE 12) along with two student development courses worth 1 credit each: SD-10 and SD-11. With this kind of "block programming" students have the chance to really get to know one another in a safe and collaborative environment. The faculty teaching these links also work closely with one another to ensure the best educational needs of the student.
