A national search has begun for the next president of The City University of New York's (CUNY) Kingsborough Community College, located in Brooklyn, NY. The next leader will take the helm of a college deemed An Achieving the Dream Leader College and identified by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program as one of the top in the nation.

One of the first orders of business for the college in this process is the selection of three faculty members for the search committee.  [In this case, CUNY defines "faculty" as those holding the rank of tenured Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor.  Presidents, vice presidents, provosts or deans holding faculty rank are excluded.]  Our past practice, which conforms to CUNY Presidential Search guidelines, has been for the full-time faculty members –and only those faculty members – of our College Council to elect those representatives.  Please note that the representatives to the search committee do not necessarily have to be members of the College Council, but the faculty members of the College Council serve as the nominators and electors.  We will follow this process again.

Faculty who are not members of the College Council but who wish to be nominated should contact a faculty member of the College Council for consideration.   All those who are contemplating becoming a nominee, however, should know that a presidential search committee member assumes a responsibility involving a significant commitment of time and an obligation to travel occasionally to Manhattan for meetings with the rest of the committee.

The entire search committee will consist of the following:

  1. One CUNY President.

  2. Three members of the Kingsborough faculty.

  3. Two Kingsborough student government leaders.

  4. One Kingsborough alumnus/alumna.

  5. A total of five members from the following list:

a. Between 3-5 members of the CUNY Board of Trustees; if fewer than five trustees are appointed, then the remaining members will be

b. Up to 2 senior-level administrators, one who is affiliated with Kingsborough and one from a different college; and/or

c. Up to 2 other individuals who have a past track record of being associated with Kingsborough. They will be recommended by the Chancellor and appointed by the Chair of the Board of Trustees.

The election of the faculty members of the Presidential Search Committee will take place at the College Council meeting on Tuesday September 26, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the MAC Rotunda. It will follow these procedures:

a.The faculty members of the Council shall nominate no fewer than three (3) qualified persons to serve on the Presidential Search Committee. Candidates need only one nomination, may decline, and do not need to be present. They are not required to be elected members of the College Council.

CUNY defines qualified "faculty" as those holding the rank of tenured Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor (Presidents, vice presidents, provosts or deans holding faculty rank are excluded).
b. If more than three qualified candidates are nominated, the faculty members of the Council shall then elect only three members to the Search Committee. The election shall be by secret ballot. Those candidates who receive the three highest vote totals will be declared the winners. In the case of a tie for the final position(s), a run-off shall be held between the tied candidates. Further run-offs shall be held as necessary until the required number of candidates win (either through achieving a higher number of votes or declinations by opponents).

c.The names of the elected Search Committee members shall be forwarded to the CUNY Administration.

d. If any of the winners are subsequently unable or decline to serve, they shall be replaced by the next runner-up in the election.
