WebLab#6: Exercise #2 Life Span Extension and Genetic Alteration of
Foods and Bacteria
Objectives:
To utilize the worldwide web as a research tool.
To apply basic genetic knowledge to understand the current
reserach on human lifespan extension, and the genetic manipulation of food
and bacteria.
To work in groups to divide up the issues and then to debate,
in the laboratory class, the potentially positive and negative effects of
such research.
Materials:
Computer and ISP.
Methods:
Gather information about one of the three possible
areas: life span extension, genetic modification of foods, or genetic
modification of bacteria. The following sites can help you get started:
Regarding the genetic manipulation of foods, visit
mofga.org.
You will find many sites regarding the peaceful
uses of genetically altered bacteria. However, regarding weaponized
bacteria, start out visiting this governmental
site.
Part of one laboratory class will be used to place
you into a debating group.
Each student will have an opportunity to express an
opinion in debate format in a laboratory class to follow.
