LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
The mission of Robert J. Kibbee Library’s Library Instruction and Information Literacy Program is to ensure, in partnership with classroom faculty, that Kingsborough Community College students graduate as information literate members of our information age society. The program seeks to achieve this through provision of course-related and course-integrated instructional activities, tours and orientations. The library also aims to transform everyday reference encounters with students into active information literacy training opportunities.
The Robert J. Kibbee Library’s Library Instruction and Information Literacy Program embraces the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, from which the following goals and objectives for the Program and its participants are derived:
Goal 1: To enable students to determine the nature and extent of their information need.
Objective 1.1: Define a research topic.
Objective 1.2: Formulate questions based on information need.
Objective 1.3: Define specific focus and articulate thesis statement.
Objective 1.4: Identify key concepts that describe information need.
Objective 1.5: Refine/modify an information need to achieve a manageable focus.
Objective 1.6: Recognize importance of existing knowledge in the creation of new knowledge.
Goal 2: To train students to access needed information effectively and efficiently.
Objective 2.1: Know the sources and formats of information.
Objective 2.2: Understand the design, storage and organization of information.
Objective 2.3: Know the general flow of information.
Objective 2.4: Determine kind of information needed.
Objective 2.5: Become familiar with the tools for retrieving information.
Objective 2.6: Know strategies for retrieving needed information.
Objective 2.7: Reflect on successes, failures and alternative strategies.
Goal 3: To train students to critically evaluate information and its sources.
Objective 3.1: Examine and compare information from various sources.
Objective 3.2: Evaluate information on the basis of reliability, validity, accuracy, authority, timeliness, and point of view or bias.
Objective 3.3: Examine probable accuracy by questioning the source of the data, the limitations of the information gathering tools or strategies, and the reasonableness of the conclusions.
Goal 4: To equip students with an understanding of economic, legal, and social issues surrounding information use, so that they may access and use information ethically and legally.
Objective 4.1: Know the importance of acknowledging use of information sources.
Objective 4.2: Understand cultural and ethical issues involved in plagiarism.
Objective 4.3: Understand the concepts of intellectual property and copyright.
Objective 4.4: Know and use the various styles for presenting information.
