The Cover Letter

A cover letter introduces you to a potential employer. In the first sentence the cover letter should state the position you are applying for and reference the source of the job ad. The second paragraph should contain information regarding your work experience and educational background. The last paragraph should be a closing, in which you indicate that a resume is attached or enclosed and that you are anticipating their response to your materials.

Ten Tips for Cover Letters
  • The cover letter should be done in business format- all text aligned on the left hand side.
  • All text should be typed in a standard font, such as Times New Roman, in a size no larger than 12pt. and no smaller than 8pt.
  • Make each letter personal- address a specific member of the company. If necessary, call for a contact name.
  • Write each letter for a specific job. Since each job you apply for is different you should not use a generic cover letter. Show how you meet the needs of the specific job.
  • Describe your skills as they relate to the job. Tie your experience to your job skills and your skills to the job description.
  • Type and proof-read your cover letter. Appear professional by not making mistakes.
  • Be brief and use descriptive action words.
  • Be confident, creative and upbeat! You want to highlight your positive attributes not the negative.
  • Avoid disclosing personal information, such as health problems or marital status.
  • Always end with a positive expression of your interest in the company and your enthusiasm about obtaining an interview.

Thank You Letters

Thank you letters are an important part of post-interview etiquette. Many people fail to utilize this opportunity to market themselves and restate your qualifications for the position. You should send the thank you letter as soon after the interview as possible and it should be sent to everyone who played important roles in the interview. Be sure to be thank them for their time, emphasize why you would be the ideal candidate, and restate your greater interest in the position.

Thank you letters should also be sent even if you are not interested in the position, thanking the interviewers for their time and complimenting the company. There may be another employment opportunity they may consider you for in the future or the hiring manager may end up at another company. Most importantly MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION and DO NOT BURN BRIDGES!!
