• Facilitated by Marissa Schlesinger (Art) and Loretta Brancaccio-Taras (Biological Sciences), this group will, using the methodology introduced in Winter 2007 by Joan Middendorf, grapple with the idea of “expert thinking” within disciplines and how we can teach our students to think like experts. At each meeting, one or two participants will be interviewed by the others in order to articulate how they, as experts, approach and understand issues that often lead to student “bottlenecks.” The DtD faculty interest group meets about 3 times throughout the course of the semester. You may also get find information about the Decoding the Disciplines FIG on its new Wiki: http://kccddfig.pbwiki.com. Refreshments will be served.
Open to all interested faculty; newcomers always welcome. RSVP to reserve a place.

Grant funding – whether government or private funding – can be a great source of support for research, student support, community programming, or scholarship. But before you start writing that grant proposal, you need to prepare. On November 11 at 3pm, join the KCTL grants group to discuss: •The importance of framing your research question/program design •What to look for in a potential funder •Setting up grant alerts for your areas of interest •How to evaluate RFP’s |

The TWT group is for faculty who already use technology as part of their teaching and for those who don’t (well, at least not yet!). In other words, this group is for everyone who is curious about teaching with technology and the goal is an inquisitive and productive discussion among experts and novices. The meetings are relaxed (no hardcore tech-talk allowed!!!) and focus on pedagogy, the exploration of technology inside and outside the classroom, best practices, concerns, and anything else that may enrich our discussion. Lunch will be served!
Open to all interested faculty. Newcomers welcome! RSVP the Center for Teaching and Learning if you are planing to attend (kctl@kingsborough.edu, X5252).

The academically underprepared community college student may also be psychosocially underprepared for college, a condition contributing to the development of classroom-specific social phobia and a high attrition rate. Michael Miranda (Department of Behavioral Sciences) has developed the Find Your Classroom Voice Program, which uses individual and group cognitive-behavioral techniques to develop students’ academic and social integration into the college, thereby promoting active learning, academic success, and persistence in the pursuit of an Associate’s degree. In this group, faculty will discuss and develop ideas and practices designed to integrate these students into your classes.

The members of this group will make a commitment to work together for two semesters and will present their findings and recommendations to the college in June 2009.
