Event:Decoding the Disciplines Faculty Interest Group

Description:• Facilitated by Marissa Schlesinger (Art) and Loretta Brancaccio-Taras (Biological Sciences), this group will, using the methodology introduced in Winter 2007 by Joan Middendorf, grapple with the idea of “expert thinking” within disciplines and how we can teach our students to think like experts. At each meeting, one or two participants will be interviewed by the others in order to articulate how they, as experts, approach and understand issues that often lead to student “bottlenecks.” The DtD faculty interest group meets about 3 times throughout the course of the semester. You may also get find information about the Decoding the Disciplines FIG on its new Wiki: http://kccddfig.pbwiki.com. Refreshments will be served.

Description:The academically underprepared community college student may also be psychosocially underprepared for college, a condition contributing to the development of classroom-specific social phobia and a high attrition rate. Michael Miranda (Department of Behavioral Sciences) has developed the Find Your Classroom Voice Program, which uses individual and group cognitive-behavioral techniques to develop students’ academic and social integration into the college, thereby promoting active learning, academic success, and persistence in the pursuit of an Associate’s degree. In this group, faculty will discuss and develop ideas and practices designed to integrate these students into your classes.
