Home to the country’s largest school district with over one million enrolled students, it’s fitting that New York’s famous nickname evokes the classic symbol of teachers: the apple. Yet despite New York’s promise that you can make a brand new start of it, tens of thousands of students don’t have the reading skills they need to take that chance. In 2011, 69% of fourth graders from low-income homes failed to meet grade-level standards in reading. This represents just a small uptick from the City-wide average, where 71% of all fourth graders could not proficiently read grade-level texts.
We believe that every student in New York City can be king of the hill and we’re dedicated to taking a bite out of New York’s literacy crisis. Relying on strong partnerships with the New York Department of Education and other community-based organizations, we’re working to change the tune for struggling elementary students across the city.
