Sicily: A Photo Essay

October 25 - November 15, 2000

"Italy without Sicily forms no image at all in the soul; only here is the key to everything - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1787

Sicily, "the Island in the Sun" as Homer describes it in the Odyssey, is the geographical center of the Mediterranean Sea. Its unique identity has been shaped by countless civilizations, who have invaded and settled there throughout the ages. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and many other groups have left behind a rich and complex heritage, making Sicily one of the most diverse cultures in the region. Today this interwoven tapestry of cultures remains evident in building traditions, varieties of food, and many other customs found among the people.

Sicily: A Photographic Essay, is a journey recorded through a photographer’s lens that reveals through formal portrait, candid expression or in some cases the environment itself, an intimate dimension of a traveler’s experience, an intimacy that would otherwise elude memory. Though each photograph has a strength of its own, grouping them together forms a visual narrative that enables a viewer to study the lives of these rugged island people in a much deeper and more meaningful way.

As a photojournalist I have always felt black and white to be the most powerful medium one could use. We tend to look at black and white more graphically. The artifice of composition, light, shadow and texture become more dominant in the silver gelatin print. The art in black and white photography lies in combining such formal elements with the richness of visual reality. The instant fusion of art and reality creates an aura and excitement in each photograph that is unique to the medium. To the photojournalist, a photo essay in black and white is both visual journalism and fine art. Photography, like travel is a life adventure. The photographer encounters new visions contained in a stream of elusive single moments and commits them to a permanent image. The magic for the photographer comes in capturing that moment in time.
