French Courses

With emphasis placed on dialogue, pronunciation through intensive oral practice, use of the language lab and audio visual materials, one would quickly acquire basic vocabulary and grammatical elements for conversation, the necessary tools to write, describe, speak and engage in useful dialogues and exchanges in French. Let us introduce our students to French, let us communicate more easily with people in French.

A one-semester course for students without previous training in the language, or, as indicated by the Language Placement Examination score. Emphasis on correct pronunciation through intensive oral practice, use of the Language Laboratory and audio- visual materials, acquisition of basic vocabulary and the elements of grammar for conversation, comprehension, reading and writing.
NOT OPEN TO NATIVE SPEAKERS.

Further development of language skills, comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Prerequisite: Fr 1 or acceptable Language Placement Examination score.

The wonderful linguistic experiment initiated in introductory French 1 could continue in French 2, by further exploring the French language and culture and the diversity of the French speaking world through a serious reinforcement of the parts of speech studied during the first semester.

While building the vocabulary that allows fluency in the language, the cultural component of the course will increase cultural literacy with respect to the places where French is spoken, and its relevance to our daily life.

French 2 students will enjoy exercises both before and after each reading to relate the material to their own experience and to help increase their understanding of French. These readings are from authentic French materials, such as excerpts from newspapers, magazines, literary texts, and poems.

Progressive development of language skills, based on foundations established in elementary French. Grammar review supplemented by readings of modern French literature.

This French 3 course will foster a progressive study, a cycle of listening, practicing, and personalizing which will make your endeavor both rewarding and enjoyable . It will be asked from students to think and reflect by comparing French culture to their own.

Students will be encouraged to participate and respond to simple questions about their family, their life and their recent activities through short illustrated in class presentations.

Students will often find a person in situations with which they can identify. They will introduce themselves, ask for directions .For example, they will be asked what they would do in similar situations.

Students will be encouraged to put to use what they have just learned, their activities involve negotiating, real life situations such as ordering a meal, discussing their schedule, finding out what their partners did and practicing it until they are comfortable with their performance .The student verbal ability will definitely improve by preparing for and participating in this exercise of interaction.

Advanced grammar, composition and reading of modern French authors. Prerequisite: Fr 3 or acceptable Language Placement Examination score.

This is a course which introduces advanced grammar, improved reading of modern French authors and writing skills for exercises and compositions.

It will also initiate the presentation of French native speakers from different countries living in France, interacting with each other and experiencing problems that any student could encounter during any trip to France.

Audio-visual materials to be studied include short sections shot in France, Guadeloupe, Haiti and Africa which will be providing serious insights into the culture and way of life of people in these countries.

Practice in conversational patterns and basic vocabulary leading to fluency in everyday situations. Prerequisite: Fr 1 or acceptable Language Placement Examination score.

This course will generate practice in conversational patterns and basic vocabulary leading to fluency in everyday situations. One will acquire through this course basic conversational skills allowing communication with French speaking people throughout the world.

Emphasis is placed on developing capacity to converse on everyday situations and different levels .It is designed to reinforce oral competence so as to allow students to ask for and to give personal information, ask and answer questions about daily routine and work habits, express likes and dislikes and discuss plans for the future.

An interactive approach is used for this course. It integrates very well vocabulary, idioms and specialfeatureswith photos and description of common French gestures. The primary purpose of the gestures is to reinforce the meaning of those expressions associated with them that students will learn and use throughout the term.

Chronological study of major trends and developments in Haitian culture and civilization from Columbus to the present. Political, literary and artistic movements, significant historical and intellectual figures and various areas of Haiti included. Instruction is in English.

Independent study of French is developed individually between student and faculty member and must be approved by the Department.

This course is of a topical and pilot nature and is designed to meet the immediate needs and interests of various student populations. It is offered for a maximum of two semesters.
