Welcome to You!
ARB 1-- Elementary Arabic I
This Arabic course is taught through a communicative approach used at leading American universities. It is designed for students interested in acquiring the language they need to function in a variety of Arabic-speaking environments. Four distinct, but interconnected skills are presented at the beginning level: Reading, Writing, Listening Comprehension, and Speaking.
This introductory course will enable students to build proficiency and confidence
in their use Arabic for academic purposes as well as for a range of employment opportunities
including business, health care, law, and travel and tourism.
No previous knowledge of the Arabic language or writing is expected. Students may
already possess one of the four skills mentioned above. Some students, for example,
know how to read Arabic, but may never have had a conversation in the language before.
For other students, the opposite is true; they may have had many years of practice
listening to and speaking Arabic and now wish to learn how to read and write. Many
students will have had no prior experience with the Arabic language. Step-by-step
instruction makes the course accessible to all learners.
Over the years, students with a wide range of interests and needs have found the course
to be useful. They range from those wishing to communicate with Arabic-speaking business
partners, to those in the medical field who have found Arabic to be a great help in
communicating with their patients. Others have used their skills to conduct research
or communicate while traveling to Arabic-speaking countries. Still others have used
their newly developed skills to engage in conversation with Arabic-speaking family
members.
Here at Kingsborough Community College, there are large numbers both of students interested
in learning Arabic, and students from the Arab world interested in learning English.
Opportunities exist for students to complement and enhance their language skills through
structured language exchanges.
Arabic is offered at most 4 year colleges. The credits you receive here at Kingsborough
in Arabic can be transferred to most institutions of higher learning.
