"Biotechnology" is today's world of science applied to every aspect of your life: reading your personal genetic code, diagnosing and treating your genetic disorders, modifying your foods to remain fresh and be more nutritious, understanding and countering the potential bioterrorism of engineered bacteria and viruses, creation of new and effectine classes of drugs to fight disease and aging, and all the ethical and commercial issues that arise from these endeavors.
"You", the potential biotechnologist, can become part of this creative field through 2 years of training at Kingsborough Community College with the potential for further education and advancement beyond our campus to an exciting new world of science and its bioengineering applications. |
Kingsborough Community Collegeannounces a new 2-year, A.S. Biotechnologydegree program: The Brooklyn Biotechnology Bridge (see detailed curriculumand project personnel). The program is designed for high school graduates who wish to gain job-related skills for immediate employment in thebiotechnology industry.Students can also continue their studies toward a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at Brooklyn College, further enhancing their earning potential in the biotechnology field (see Pathways through the Program)
The program's content is based on industry need determined by direct contact with local and national Biotech companies. Experienced grant personnelwill teach our biotech coursesduring the students’ first 2 years at Kingsborough. Students will graduate from Kingsborough with a 60 cr. A.S. Biotechnology Degree.
All students recruited into the BT Bridge will also become part of our currently running, NSF-funded, Brooklyn Gateway projectentitling them to enroll in gateway courses (Biology 1, Chemistry 1 and Physics 1) taught utilizing the successful Peer-Led-Team-Learning (PLTL) approach. Students will also receive free tutoring, attend science-oriented seminars, attend trips to local science centers, and have the opportunity to participate in mentored research.
The biotech program is front-loaded: students completing their first two years at KCC will be immediately qualified for entry-level jobs in the BT industry. Further study at BC leading to the BA/BS degrees will enhance their knowledge and increase chances for advancement in the BT field.
Additional program highlights include summer workshopsfor high school teachers to enhance our recruitment efforts in the high schools during the academic year, summer workshops for college teachers to increase biotech awareness in local college curricula, the development of instructional videoson biotech topics to be made available on the Internet, and comprehensive tracking of studentsand assessment of the program’s effectiveness.
