Lesson 2 - Comparative Sizes of Objects

Student Performance Objectives
1. Explain the numerical difference in size of a crystal of salt, a typical human cell, a bacterial
cell, a DNA molecule, a water molecule, and a carbon atom.
2. Solve simple problems interconverting metric and English equivalents for length.
3. Explain the difference between eucaryotic and procaryotic cells.
4. Explain the difference in size of eucaryotic and procaryotic cell.

Lesson Outline
A. Review handout on the relative sizes of cells and their components from reference
source: Goodsell, D.S., The Machinery of Life.
B. Metric-English equivalents - work only with length measurements today: meter,
centimeter and inch, and foot conversion values
C. Visit
http://www.cellsalive.com "How Big?" animation
D. Assignment: written report on "What is a Rhinovirus, Ebola virus, Staphylococcus
and E. coli bacteria."
