Dr. Gordon
Young became fascinated with the field of Speech Communication as an
undergraduate upon learning that that the limits of your language are the
limits of your world. Dr. Young joined our department in the fall of 2004
after graduating with his Ph.D. in Speech Communication from Southern
Illinois University. He previously studied at the University of Maine (M.A. and
M.A.L.S.) and at Cape Breton University (B.A.). Dr. Young relishes studying
how popular culture can both shape and reflect how we think and talk about
culture, gender, class, ourselves and our relationships. Dr. Young writes and
researches on a variety of topics including: critical race theories, communication
apprehension, multicultural education, codepdendence, the rhetoric of
Frederick Douglass & Virginia Woolf, and the social impact of television,
film, and technology. In addition to teaching Dr. Young is the faculty
advisor to the Speech Communication Club, the president elect of CLASP (CUNY
League of Active Speech Professors), and a book review editor for the American Communication Journal. |
