Background:
- In this exercise, we will explore biodiversity through the work of a contemporary artist, Patricia Fagerland.

Originally from Long Island, NY, Patricia Fagerland is a multi-media
media artist and educator living in Washington State with her
husband and two teenage sons. Her experience includes solo and
group exhibitions, book illustrations, poster and label design,
design for printed fabrics and teaching. Fagerland works in most
two-dimensional mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolors
and printmaking methods of etching, monotype and linoleum block.
Fagerland has spent a lifetime making and studying art. Nature has provided much of her inspiration, whether from the towering forests encountered on yearly summer backpacking trips, mountains bursting with wildflowers, her Dad's garden or her own.
Fagerland is an advocate for the arts and believes that all children should have the benefit of education in the arts. She has been actively involved in her community, first by volunteering her time in the classroom, and then as an after school art instructor. She is currently an arts consultant for her school district. As a consultant, she has the privilege to train classroom teachers to use legitimate art materials and teach grade appropriate art lessons that often integrate with math, science or literature. Fagerland states, "It is very exciting work, offering children the tools for creative expression and empowering them with a mastery in visual communication."
- Fagerland has shared her art work with us,
so that we, too, may see the diversity of life through her creative
mind. As we work our way through this exercise, we will study
samples of Fagerland's work. As you study each piece of art, you
will link to a related Website with information on the plant or
animal presented. You will then complete the related exercise.
