"Out With the Old..."

Hi, my name is Yelena Mandenberg and I am the Acting Editor-In-Chief of the Scepter.

Scepter has been a great experience for me ever since I joined as a staff writer at the beginning of the Spring 2008 semester. It has given me a reason to stay in school, and expand my abilities as a writer, as well as a sense of responsibility. I spent my childhood reading, writing and editing anything I could get my hands on. After spending my high school years just messing around, Scepter has been a great way to not only use my strengths to do something productive, but it is also been a great way to further increase and develop my skills.

My predecessors had a much more difficult time trying to turn the paper into a substantial college newspaper that measured up to other CUNY colleges. My task is a little easier, but really, it is never that easy. My hope is to make Scepter even bigger and better.

Scepter is always looking for new staff writers who can bring a new variety of articles to the table, copy editors, production editors and photographers.

I got to take the reigns during a landmark summer, at least in my book. Most of us by now know Astroland is closing down.

This thought saddens a lot of people, most of all me. Growing up in the area and visiting Astroland every weekend when I was a kid is the memory that sticks out most in my mind. Even now when I visit it, its hard to have fun when all I can think about is these historical rides (as unsafe as they may be) that will be torn down, and turned into what they call a “better” amusement park.

Pushing people out of a neighborhood and building a hotel and super touristy amusement park does not make anything better.

In my opinion, Coney Island’s Astroland has the best events of the summer, from the Mermaid Parade and the Siren Music Festival to fireworks every Friday. It is just sad to think a vital park of Brooklyn’s history is being destroyed.

Although this summer is bittersweet in one way, working on the 2008 graduation issue of Scepter definitely made up for it. I’ve been shown the ropes by the former editors, but I didn’t realize how difficult it would be. At the same time, I had a blast doing it. Now I just want to do as much as I can to expand Scepter. Hopefully, my reign as Editor-In-Chief will live up to all expectations.

Scepter’s acting managing editor, Angelo Natoli and I make a great team, we both have the same ideas and hopes for Scepter in the coming semesters.

We would like to increase the number of staff, have a broader range of articles on all topics and interests, as well as put out the newspaper more frequently. Scepter is an amazing outlet for all students, regardless of their major or interests. So, hopefully, together, we can make it happen and expand Scepter to its full potential.

"In With the New..."

Hi, I’m Angelo Natoli, the new Interim Managing Editor.

I began writing for Scepter last semester and I’ve had a blast doing it, so when I heard I could have the opportunity to be Managing Editor, even temporarily, I jumped at the opportunity.
Hopefully this won’t be the only time I will be writing a letter from the editor, but even if it is, I am grateful for the experience. Yelena and I have big things planned for Scepter and hopefully we will have the opportunity to see our plans become a reality.

Thankfully last semester’s editors accomplished the amazing task of gathering a talented crew of writers, photographers and copy editors. So rather than trying to simply get a newspaper out, Yelena and I can focus on making Scepter even better than it was last year.

Putting together this graduation issue was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be but rather than wanting to give up, the challenge makes the job all the more rewarding and I cannot wait to see the first of what will hopefully be many more issues with both Yelena’s and my name on it as editors around the school.

Yelena and I are going to make sure when you open up an issue of Scepter that every article in there is something a KCC student will want to read.

Once I graduate, I hope to be a writer in the entertainment industry and because of this I’m certain the entertainment section this year will be the best it’s ever been. Expect more movie, video game, music reviews and previews then ever before.

We don’t write because we enjoy typing, we want to write what you guys want to read. So feel free to send us an email with suggestions of what you want to see when you open up an issue of Scepter at Scepter@kingsborough.edu.

Scepter is more of a family than a job mainly because you don’t get paid for being there. However, if you’re interested in joining our family, we’re always looking for more staff.
Do you draw? Write? Do you want to do design? Well how about after you get your vanilla latte’ from Kings Brew you walk upstairs to our office in M230 and come see if working for Scepter is right for you.

I hope everyone is as excited for the coming year as I am. Together I believe we can make Scepter the best it’s ever been.

We have dedicated staff and we are only going to get better. This may be the last issue of the semester but it is also the first of a whole new era for Scepter.
