New Athletic Field

Toni S. Johnson

New fieldWe are now in soccer season but Kingsborough’s Soccer team has been practicing and playing their games at the Verrazano Narrows Soccer Complex in Brooklyn. That’s because their regular field is currently a pile of dirt. But not for long. The field will be completed at the beginning of March; the athletic department is ecstatic about the new addition to campus. “We are so looking forward to it. Everyone is patiently waiting, including myself,” Cathy Dachtera, Assistant Athletic Director said from the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. “I’m down there just about every day peeking through the gates. The contractors are doing a great job.”

The field will include NJCAA regulated baseball and soccer fields and a workout area where teams like the outdoor track and field team can workout and use their equipment. Top of the line materials will be used on the field, such as artificial turf. The project was initiated by President Peruggi and includes a partnership with the NYC Parks Department. Dean Paulette Dalpes, Dean of Students said, “I think it’s exciting that our students will have a new field to use for athletics and recreation.” Currently, the sports facilities are located in the “G” building and host a variety of equipment and space to serve both students and athletes who play for
the school.

The facilities include a gymnasium, dance studio, two squash courts, an olympic size swimming pool, fitness room and outdoor tennis courts.
These facilities are available for use and the current schedule can be found on the athletics website: http://www.kbcc.cuny.edu/athletics.
With the addition of the new athletic field Kingsborough’s campus will be enhanced and expanded.
