If you love fashion, then you know Vogue Magazine. And you will also know that the fashion-faithful publication has devoted this month’s issue to our First Lady, Michelle Obama. Not only is she the spouse to our nation’s first African-American president, but she has also managed to maintain her sense of fashion while being America’s leading lady.
A graceful woman, devoted mother and our nation’s emblem of change, but what many don’t know is that she has become a fashionista in her own sense. Raised on Chicago’s south side, fashion was the least of her worries; she was too busy making her way to Harvard Law.
Being the commander-of- support to our nations 44th president has not stopped her from being a woman. In the March 2009 issue of Vogue Magazine, the First Lady admits, "I love clothes… first and foremost, I wear what I love. That's what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion." This mystery woman, like many other women, wants to feel comfortable, yet charming in what she wears; so when she showed up to the inauguration wearing that Isabel Toledo lemongrass ensemble, she wowed the crowd with a dress that was classy and fashionable, yet affordable.
There is no doubt that she is constantly in the public eye; so maintaining her image has become essential. In this month’s Vogue, the First Lady states that she dresses “pragmatic and not glamorous…that’s what matters when I get dressed.” Simplicity is the key element in her wardrobe.
In Vogue, the superb lady chats about her new home and her family life. "We learned in our household that there was nothing you couldn't talk about and that you found humor in even some of the toughest times. I want to bring that spirit of warmth, openness, and stability to my task." Being a mother, she has instilled the same values into her own family; she has vowed to become an even better mother to her two daughters Sasha and Malia.
Not only does she reflect her feelings on fashion and family but she has also opened up to the trendy publication about her feelings on the night of the inauguration as well: "I was proud as a wife, amazed as a citizen," she recollects, “I felt a sense of relief, a sense of calm, that the country I lived in was the country I thought I lived in."
Our leading lady is an extraordinary woman; she has been in the White House for less than 90 days and has still rocked the fashion world and made time for her family, all while balancing an intimate relationship with her “best friend of sixteen years.” She has universally become an icon for women all around the world and the Vogue fashion world commends her on her style and elegance.
So who is the First Lady of Fashion? She is Michelle Obama, and she is the First Lady of Fashion!
