New Film Club for Kingsborough

If you love film and would like to interact with other people who also share a love of film just as much as you do, then the new Film Club, which will be opening up in Kingsborough, is just the place to be. The club is set to meet on Thursday afternoons and is run by Professor Stephen Armstrong and Professor Frank Percaccio.

So, why join when you can just watch movies at home? Joining the club is a good way to meet other students who share the passion of watching and critiquing good films. The club will be held in a “computerized classroom” where the film will be watched and the students “would show scenes from the film that we could watch as a group and then have a free flowing discussion of why those scenes are powerful or effective within the film.” Students who join the club will not only be able to discuss the film but they will also confer camera angles, sound, music and lighting.

In a brief interview, Professor Armstrong stated that the club will “bring students the opportunity to discuss movies in a relaxed and thoughtful environment…where the students can merge their love of certain films with an appreciation for their visual power.”

Armstrong hopes that this club will “expand the students’ ability to think about film while enjoying discussing the films.” Like many other clubs in Kingsborough, the Film Club will give students a “hang-out” spot where they can relax and share their common hobbies, and talk about topics other than school and education.

After noticing that many colleagues were also club advisers, Armstrong thought that starting a club “was a great way to work with students in a less formal environment than the classroom” and after realizing his deep passion for film, he joined forces with Percaccio, who also shared a love for film and decided to start a Film Club.

The club does not only bring film lovers together but it also welcomes “…people of all ethnicities, backgrounds, and age groups”. Being a member of the Film Club will allow “students to be able to explore their artistic and intellectual interests with each other in an informal environment.” Both Percaccio and Armstrong allow members to play a big role and participate in the club by letting each student present a weekly topic, which elates them and reflects that student’s personality. Not only will the students share films in class but also the club budget will be used for trips to theaters to go see the newest films at a theater on a big screen, and students will also participate in a “student movie night out.” What sounds better than a free movie and a night out with friends?

Armstrong describes the club to be “compelling, thought-provoking and stimulating.” If film is your interest or if you are looking to mingle with fellow Kingsborough students, joining the Film Club sounds like the place to do it.
