CW Doesn't Care About Its Viewers

This is what we are led to believe when the network rarely does promotion or none at all to two of the highest rated shows on their channel, Smallville and Supernatural. Since the season premiere of those shows in September of 2008 they have been highly rated on the Nielsen TV Ratings under the network. Several times Smallville has been number one with Supernatural following closely behind. Yet they still don’t get fundamental amount of promotion that they deserve. It’s not like the CW does not promote any of their shows because they do, in fact the CW tend to promote their highly buzzed shows 90210 and Gossip Girl very often.

You can see Advertisement for these shows are made evident, Gossip Girl posters are on busses with the depiction “OMFG” and numerous commercials on the network and also on the radio that promote the show. 90210 have gotten high praises because it was the highest rated series premiere that was on the network ever. Thus the CW have spent a lot of time to put emphasis on its promotion on their newly remake show. There is no doubt that these two shows are so buzzed out that you can basically hear sopranos singing around them. Since the series premiere of 90210 the show have lost many of their viewers and Gossip Girl fan base is steadily declining when it comes to TV rating wise. So a good question to ask is why have the CW insist on spending money on shows that don’t make them any money?

Many times I have wondered if Smallville and Supernatural producers have done something to personally piss off the CW, specifically Dawn Ostroff the president of the network. Dawn Ostroff and the CW have made it clear how they want their channel to be operated. “We’re very focused on building the CW’s brand as a destination for young women…” Ostroff said in an interview in 2008. Does this mean that no matter how much a show on this network has considerable low ratings and no one is watching the CW will still keep it alive. Well this makes perfect sense CW I can see why you’re the number one network. After all I am sure ABC and NBC cancel shows that don’t have a certain demo often or is because of something else.

Something like I don’t know performance of viewers Ratings! These acts for the CW should not be at any surprise to many because of the actions of the network when they caned WWE Smack Down which was one of their highest rated show. The reason that they didn’t pick it back up for the fall of 2008 was because too much testosterone was watching and not enough females.

The CW was rumoring considering on picking up the CBS sci- fi show moonlight but when asked about it in an interview the response was “if a sci-fi fantasy show came along that was really well done and would appeal to our young women demo, then we’d consider it” Ostroff said. Seriously CW have you considered it? It was showed in many polls that Moonlight had phenomenal amount of female viewers between the ages of 18-49. And the ratings for the show were higher than most shows on the network yet it was not picked up. Does this make any sense?
Maybe CW don’t appreciate a sci fi shows or understand it. Why do I have the feeling that if twilight series came to be a TV series the CW won’t even think about having a spot for it even though most of its fans are young women? Is this smartest move for the network to base it promotions and air time on that particular demography? Well they are on broadcast TV and in last place on whose watching. If the CW really wanted to make the network strictly based on young women why not go on cable?

Now that Smallville and Supernatural are renewed for another season do the right thing CW. Promote all your shows, especially the ones that is bringing in the money and viewers. Because Smallville and Supernatural won’t last forever and most likely the next season will be their last. When they are gone how will you survive? Gossip Girl and 90210? Well I guess I will have to just wait and see if the CW will sail or sink.
