Mission of TRiO at KCC The mission of TRiO is the provision of services within a supportive academic community which address the educational and vocational needs of each student to promote retention and transfers to four year colleges. We facilitate academic success and the development of transferable skills so that students can succeed in all future academic and career endeavors.
TRiO at Kingsborough Community College serves 250 students each semester and addresses academic challenges through individualized interventions including counseling, tutoring, study skills workshops, advisement, career selection, assistance with transfers to four year colleges, among other initiatives. The goals of TRiO are to increase graduation rates and transfers to four year colleges for eligible students.
TRiO is one of several (used to be three, hence TRiO) federally funded grant programs from the U.S. Department of Education. The TRiO programs were created under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to assist low-income students attend college, graduate and transfer to institutions at the next level.
There are over 2,700 TRiO programs at more than 1,000 colleges and universities in the United States which serve close to one million students. TRiO students are part of a large study community throughout the United States. Student retention among TRiO students is twice as high as students from similar backgrounds who do not participate in the program. Most Kingsborough TRiO students continue their education at four year colleges.
