(This program will not be offered in the
2014-2015 academic year.)
The Global College of Long Island University offers a four-week summer session in Costa Rica each year that allows students the opportunity to earn six credits toward their undergraduate studies at the Global College Costa Rica center. This program is designed to give students an overview of the critical peace, reconciliation and environmental issues in Costa Rica through a combination of classroom seminars, experiential learning, cultural immersion and self-study, and Spanish language training. Three weekend field trips to different parts of Costa Rica are included in the program. Students stay with host families while in Costa Rica.
Each selected student receives a scholarship of about $5,000 towards expenses. Students are responsible for the airfare (about $500), fees at LIU (about $500) and incidentals while in Costa Rica.
Students must apply to the Costa Rica Program by visiting the Associate Provost Office in M386. Students must have elementary knowledge of Spanish before applying or should take introductory Spanish at KCC in the Spring before departure.
The LIU Global summer 2012 study abroad program was truly a life changing experience. I have met so many wonderful people that all taught me many valuable lessons. It was my first time out of the United States. Traveling to Costa Rica opened my eyes in a way that I now see life and myself differently. I am so grateful for the life I have been blessed with. My experience in Costa Rica confirmed my goals in life. I want to continue doing humanitarian work, travel to other countries and incorporate my passion for food. My ultimate goal is to offer a cooking program for people and children that are less fortunate. I want to teach them about the nutritional value of vegetables also the many ways in which they can make healthy and nutritional meals for themselves and families." In Costa Rica I learned that you cannot change the world in one day but you can change people's lives one smile at a time."
