Originally from Hilo, Hawai’i, Marla Hirokawa graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in dance from the University of California, Irvine. After dancing in Hawai’i, California and for various companies in New York, she opened a school, Covenant Dance Studio in 1987, founded her dance company, Covenant Dance Theatre in 1989, and then became an incorporating founder of Covenant Ballet Theatre of Brooklyn (CBT) in 2007. She is the Artistic Director and resident choreographer of CBT where she manages the company’s professional dance company, dance academy and arts-in-education programs. She was a teaching artist for the New York City Ballet Education Department for 7 years and is an ABT® Certified Teacher, who has successfully completed the ABT Teacher Training Intensive in Primary though Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.
